Rotate PDF Pages: Fix Every Orientation
Turn sideways PDF pages, save the changes, and check the final file.
Ways to rotate pages in a PDF
To rotate pages in a PDF, open the file in an online tool or a PDF app. Choose one page or several pages, set the turn direction, then save a new copy. This fixes sideways scans and pages with the wrong orientation. The steps vary by tool, but the key choice is whether to turn selected pages or the whole file.
A PDF page can turn 90 degrees clockwise or counterclockwise. A 180-degree turn flips an upside-down page. Rotation changes how a page displays and prints. It does not change the words or images on the page.
Check the page thumbnails before you begin. Note the page numbers that need a turn, and decide whether they should face portrait or landscape. This small check helps prevent rotating pages that were already correct.
- Rotate selected pages when only a few scans or inserts are sideways.
- Rotate every page when the full document has the same wrong orientation.
- Save a copy if you may need to keep the original unchanged.

How to rotate specific PDF pages
For a mixed document, select only the pages that need fixing. In most tools, you can use the page thumbnails to pick pages, then choose a direction. For example, select pages 3 and 8 if two scanned sheets are sideways. Leave the other pages untouched.
In Adobe Acrobat, open the PDF and choose the page organization tool. Select a page thumbnail, or hold the Control key on Windows or Command key on Mac to select more than one. Use the rotate controls, review the thumbnails, and save the file. Menu names may vary between Acrobat versions.
Online tools use a similar flow. Upload the PDF, choose the affected page thumbnails, and press the rotate control until they face the right way. Download the changed file when the tool finishes. If a page turns the wrong way, turn it again before saving.
- Open the PDF in your chosen tool.
- Find the thumbnail view and mark each page that needs a turn.
- Rotate the selection in 90-degree steps.
- Review each changed page, then save or download the result.

How to rotate all pages in a PDF
When every page needs the same turn, use the rotate-all option. This is common with a landscape scan saved as portrait pages. Check the first and last pages before applying the change. A file may contain covers or inserts with a different layout.
In Adobe Acrobat, open the page organization view and select all page thumbnails. Choose the turn direction, then check several pages across the document. If the entire PDF is upside down, turn all pages by 180 degrees. Save the result under a new name to keep the source file safe.
Most online PDF tools offer a control to rotate all pages. Look for an option such as “all pages” or a select-all control. Turn the pages once, then check portrait and landscape pages separately. Some tools apply rotation to the current selection only, so confirm the selection before saving.
Rotating all pages is not the same as making all pages portrait. A mixed report may correctly include both portrait pages and wide charts. Turn the whole file only when every page shares the same orientation problem.

Rotate pages with online PDF tools
Online services can be handy when you do not have a desktop PDF app installed. Smallpdf and iLovePDF both offer browser-based page rotation. Their basic flow is alike: add a PDF, choose pages, rotate, then download the updated file. Names and screen layouts can change over time.
Use a stable internet connection and check the service's current file limits. Avoid uploading private records unless the service fits your privacy needs. For sensitive files, an offline app may be a better choice. Keep a local copy of the original before sending a file anywhere.
After the tool processes the file, download it to a known folder. Do not assume the browser saved it where you expect. Open the downloaded PDF rather than relying on the tool's preview. A preview can look right while the saved copy remains unchanged.
- Use an online tool for quick fixes on non-sensitive files.
- Choose selected-page rotation for mixed layouts.
- Download and inspect the final PDF before sharing it.

Rotate pages in desktop PDF software
Desktop software is useful for large files, repeat work, or private documents. Adobe Acrobat gives you page-level controls through its page organization tools. PDFelement also lets you rotate pages from its page view. Exact button names can differ by version, so look for page thumbnails and rotation controls.
In either app, open the file and switch to the page management view. Select one thumbnail, a range, or all pages. Apply a 90-degree or 180-degree turn, then inspect the result. Save a new copy if you want to preserve the source.
For a page range, check the first and last page in your selection. Some apps keep the last selection active, which can lead to unwanted turns. Clear the selection before starting another group. This is especially useful when a file has several scans mixed with normal pages.
When editing a signed or locked PDF, the app may limit changes. Work from an unlocked copy only if you have the right to edit it. Keep the original file if the signature or access settings matter.
Save and check the rotated PDF
Save the changed file with a clear name, such as “report-rotated.pdf.” This makes it easy to tell the new copy from the source. If the app offers Save As or Export, use it when you want to keep both versions. Wait for the save or download to finish before closing the tool.
Open the saved PDF in a viewer and check every changed page. Confirm that text reads upright and that charts, photos, and margins remain in view. Review both thumbnail view and full-page view. Then print one test page if the PDF is going to a printer.
Also check the page count and file size. They should usually stay close to the original, since rotation does not add or remove pages. If a page is still sideways, reopen the saved copy and correct that page alone. Keep the original until the new file has passed your checks.
- Confirm the turned pages display in the right direction.
- Check that no page was missed or turned by mistake.
- Keep the source until you have opened the saved copy.
