Adobe PDF Printer: Setup and Fixes

What the Adobe PDF Printer Does

The Adobe PDF printer turns files from apps into PDF files. To install it, install a compatible paid version of Adobe Acrobat, then check Windows printer settings. Acrobat usually adds the printer during setup.

When you choose Adobe PDF from an app’s print menu, Acrobat saves the output as a PDF. This can help when an app lacks its own PDF export option. The printer is part of Acrobat, not the free Acrobat Reader.

Windows 7 and Windows 10 have different support needs. Current Acrobat versions may not support Windows 7. Check the system needs for your Acrobat version before you begin.

Check the Requirements Before Setup

Confirm that your Windows version and Acrobat release work together. Windows 7 support ended in 2020, so newer Acrobat releases may not install on it. Use an older Acrobat version only if its system needs list Windows 7.

You also need an active Acrobat license, enough free disk space, and permission to install software. Sign in to Windows as an administrator. Close open apps before setup to help avoid file conflicts.

  • Check your Windows edition and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Check the Acrobat version’s system needs on Adobe’s official site.
  • Keep your Acrobat installer or setup files nearby.
  • Restart Windows if you have pending updates or setup prompts.

Do not download printer drivers from unknown sites. The Adobe PDF printer uses files and tools supplied with Acrobat. A separate driver can be unsafe or fail to work with your Acrobat release.

Install the Printer in Windows 7 or 10

For either Windows version, install Acrobat first. If Acrobat is already on the computer, run its repair option before adding the printer by hand. The exact setup screens can vary by Acrobat release.

  1. Close Acrobat and other open apps.
  2. Run the Acrobat installer as an administrator.
  3. Choose the install or repair option shown by the setup program.
  4. Let setup finish, then restart Windows if asked.
  5. Open Control Panel and view the installed printers.
  6. Look for Adobe PDF in the printer list.

In Windows 10, open Start, type Control Panel, and select it. Choose Devices and Printers to view the printer list. In Windows 7, open Start, then choose Control Panel and Devices and Printers.

If Adobe PDF appears, open a file and select Print. Pick Adobe PDF, then choose Print again. Select a folder and file name when Acrobat asks where to save the PDF.

Test with a simple document first. Check that the PDF opens and that page size, orientation, and fonts look right. If the test works, try a file from the app you use most.

Add Adobe PDF Through Control Panel

If the printer is missing, try adding it through Control Panel. This works only if Acrobat’s PDF driver and related files are already on the computer. If those files are missing, repair or reinstall Acrobat first.

In Devices and Printers, choose Add a printer. Select the option to add a local printer, then choose the Adobe PDF port if it appears. Select Adobe as the maker and Adobe PDF Converter as the printer model, if those choices are listed.

Names and port options can vary by Acrobat version. Do not pick a random port just to complete the wizard. If Adobe PDF Converter or its port is absent, stop and run Acrobat repair instead.

  1. Open Control Panel, then Devices and Printers.
  2. Choose Add a printer, then select Add a local printer.
  3. Choose the Adobe PDF port, if it is available.
  4. Select Adobe PDF Converter from the driver list, if shown.
  5. Finish the wizard, then restart Windows.

Once added, print a test file to Adobe PDF. If Windows asks for a driver location, use the Acrobat installation files for your installed version. Avoid mixing files from different Acrobat releases.

Fix Common Setup Problems

If Adobe PDF is not listed, first confirm that your Acrobat release includes the printer feature. Then run the installer’s repair option. Restart Windows and check the printer list again.

If the printer appears but fails to create a file, check that the save folder exists and allows you to save files. Try a short file name and a different folder. Also close and reopen the app you are printing from.

  • Setup stops: Restart Windows, close other apps, and run setup as an administrator.
  • The driver is missing: Repair Acrobat, then check Devices and Printers again.
  • Printing stalls: Restart the computer and try a small test file.
  • The PDF looks wrong: Check page size, print range, and font settings in the app.
  • Windows 7 will not install Acrobat: Check whether that Acrobat release supports Windows 7.

Keep Acrobat and Windows files from the same supported setup. Do not delete printer files or change system folders by hand. Those steps can break other Acrobat features.

For best results, use a short test document with one page. Confirm that the printer creates a PDF, saves it in the chosen folder, and opens without an error. This quick check can reveal setup faults before you print a large file.

Other Ways to Create a PDF

If Acrobat’s printer will not install, use an app’s built-in Save as PDF or Export to PDF option. Many office and web apps can make PDFs without the Adobe printer. This is often the simplest path for one-off files.

Windows 10 also has Microsoft Print to PDF. Choose it from the print menu, then set the file name and save location. It can create a basic PDF, but it does not use Acrobat’s PDF settings.

If you need Acrobat features, such as its PDF settings or tools, repair the Acrobat install or use a supported Acrobat release. Windows 7 users should weigh the risks of an unsupported operating system. A newer Windows version may be needed for current Acrobat software.

In short, how to install Adobe PDF printer depends on having the right Acrobat version. Install or repair Acrobat first, check Devices and Printers, then test a small file. Use the built-in Windows PDF printer when you only need basic PDF creation.
