PNG and PDF: What’s the Difference?

To make a PNG a PDF, use an online converter or a tool already on your device. Choose the method that suits your needs, add your image, then save or download the PDF. On Mac, Preview can do this. On Windows, use the Photos app or a PDF printer.

PNG is an image file format. It stores a picture as pixels and can keep a transparent background. PDF is a document format. It can hold text, images, and several pages in one file.

A PNG usually works well for a single image. A PDF is often easier to share when you need several pictures in one document, or want the page size and layout to stay consistent.

Why Turn a PNG Into a PDF?

PDF files open on most computers and phones without special image software. That makes them useful for sharing scans, forms, artwork, and receipts. A recipient can view the file as a document instead of opening each picture on its own.

PDFs also let you combine several PNG images into one file. For example, you can put four pages of a scanned form in order and send one attachment. The images stay embedded in the document.

Keep in mind that converting does not improve a low-quality image. The PDF can preserve the source picture, but it cannot add detail that was not there. Check image size and clarity before you convert.

  • Use PDF when you need to share multiple images as one file.
  • Use PNG when transparency or direct image editing matters.
  • Check the PDF after saving to confirm each page looks right.

How to Convert PNG to PDF Online

An online conversion service is handy when you cannot install an app. Services such as PNG2PDF and Online2PDF let you upload image files, set options, and download the result. The steps are similar across most sites.

  1. Open the converter in your browser.
  2. Select the PNG files from your device, or drag them into the upload area.
  3. Arrange the files in the order you want, if you are combining images.
  4. Choose any page size or layout options the service offers.
  5. Start the conversion, then download and review the PDF.

For a single image, check that the page fits the picture without unwanted cropping. For several images, confirm their order before you download. Keep the original PNG files until you have checked the finished PDF.

Consider privacy before uploading. Use a trusted service, and avoid sending sensitive scans to a site unless its privacy terms meet your needs. Delete uploaded files from the service when that option is available.

Convert PNG to PDF on a Mac With Preview

Preview is built into macOS, so you can make a PDF without an extra download. Open the PNG in Preview, then choose File and Print. In the print window, use the PDF menu and select Save as PDF.

Choose a file name and save location, then save the new document. Open the PDF and check that the image fits the page. If you need several pictures in one PDF, open them in Preview and arrange the thumbnails in the order you want before saving.

For a multi-image document, make sure each picture appears as its own page. If Preview opens images in separate windows, you may need to drag them into one window’s thumbnail sidebar first. The exact menus can vary slightly by macOS version.

Convert PNG to PDF on Windows

Windows can create a PDF through its built-in print feature. Open the PNG in the Photos app, select Print, and choose Microsoft Print to PDF as the printer. Set the page layout, then select Print and choose where to save the PDF.

Windows Photo Viewer may also be available on some computers. Open the image, choose Print, and select Microsoft Print to PDF if it appears in the printer list. On newer Windows systems, Photos is usually the simpler built-in option.

Before saving, check the preview for cropping and page orientation. If you are printing several images, select them together in File Explorer, then use the print option. Review the page order and layout before creating the file.

These steps use a virtual printer. They do not send the image to a physical printer. If Microsoft Print to PDF is missing, check Windows optional features or use an installed PDF printer.

Make a PDF From PNG on an iPhone

You can also turn a PNG into a PDF on an iPhone without a computer. Open the image in Photos, tap the share button, then choose Print. On the print preview, spread two fingers outward to open the preview as a PDF.

Tap the share button again and save the PDF to Files, or send it to someone. The wording and icons can vary by iOS version. Open the saved file in Files to check the page before sharing it.

If you have several images, select them in Photos and use the same print workflow. Review the preview to confirm the images appear in the right order. This built-in option is useful when you need a quick file while away from your computer.

Quality Checks and Best Practices

For a sharp result, start with the highest-resolution PNG you have. Avoid taking a screenshot of the image before converting it. A screenshot may reduce detail or change the image dimensions.

Choose a page size that suits the picture. A small image placed on a large page may look tiny, while a mismatched layout can crop its edges. Check the preview and adjust fit, orientation, or margins when the tool allows it.

  • Keep the original PNG as a backup.
  • Use a clear file name so you can find the PDF later.
  • Open the finished PDF and inspect every page.
  • Use a local app for private images when possible.

The best way to make a PNG into a PDF depends on your device and task. Online converters work across platforms, while Preview and Windows print tools avoid extra software. Check the final file before you send it.
