Adding Lines to PDFs: Tools and Steps
Draw, style, and manage PDF lines with tools you may already have.
Why add lines to a PDF?
You can add a line to a PDF with a markup or drawing tool. Use Adobe Acrobat, a web editor, Mac Preview, or Microsoft Edge. The exact steps vary, but most tools let you draw, change the line’s color, and adjust its thickness.
Lines can point to details, divide sections, or mark an area for review. A straight line works well for a neat divider. A dashed line can mark a suggested change without altering the source text. These marks are usually annotations, not edits to the original page content.
Choose a trusted tool before opening a file with private details. Online editors upload your document to a service. An offline app can be a better fit when the PDF must stay on your device.
Add a line in Adobe Acrobat

Acrobat’s Comment tools let you draw a line over a PDF page. The Comment Toolbar may appear at the top or side of the window, depending on your version and layout. If you do not see it, open the Tools area and choose Comment.
- Open the PDF. Save a copy first if you want to keep the original unchanged.
- Open the Comment tools. Select the speech-bubble or Comment option, then find the drawing tools.
- Choose the line tool. Select the straight-line icon from the toolbar.
- Draw the line. Click where the line should start, then drag to its end point. Hold Shift while dragging if your version supports angle snapping.
- Set its look. Select the line, then open its properties. Choose a color and line width. Some versions also offer a dashed style.
- Save your work. Use Save As to make a new copy, or save the current file.
That is how to add a line in PDF Acrobat without changing the words beneath it. If the toolbar has a separate arrow tool, do not choose it for a plain line. Use the line tool, then check the mark at normal zoom before saving.
Use an online PDF editor

Online tools can add a line in a PDF without installing desktop software. Smallpdf and PDFelement Cloud offer browser-based PDF features, though menus and free-use limits can change. Use their drawing or annotation feature, rather than a tool meant to add text.
For Smallpdf, open its PDF editor in a browser and upload the file. Choose a drawing or shape tool, select a straight line if offered, then drag across the page. Set the color or width from the tool controls, apply the edit, and download the finished PDF.
With PDFelement Cloud, sign in and open the PDF in its web editor. Find the comment or drawing tools, choose the line option, and drag on the page. Review the result, then save or download the updated file. Names and locations of controls may differ as the service changes.
Before uploading, consider whether the file contains personal or business data. Check the service’s current privacy terms and file limits. When the file is sensitive, use an offline tool instead.
Draw lines with offline software
Mac Preview includes Markup tools for adding shapes to a PDF. Open the file in Preview, then select the Markup toolbar button. Choose the line shape and drag across the page. Open the style controls to change its color or line weight, then save the PDF.
Preview may show a line as part of the page markup. Keep a separate copy if you need to preserve a clean original. Also check that the saved file still opens in another PDF reader.
Microsoft Edge can mark up many PDFs with its drawing tools. Open the PDF in Edge, find the draw or markup control, and choose a pen style. Draw the line with a mouse, trackpad, or touchscreen. Change the pen color or width if those controls appear, then save or download the marked file.
Edge’s pen may create a freehand stroke rather than a perfectly straight line. For a crisp divider, use a shape tool in a PDF editor when available. Check the final result after saving, since browser versions can handle markup in different ways.
Make lines clear and easy to manage
Use a line weight that remains visible without covering nearby content. A thin line often suits a form or document with small type. A thicker line can work for a large diagram, but may hide details underneath.
Pick a color with enough contrast against the page. Dark blue or black can suit a formal review. A softer color can separate notes from the source, but avoid pale shades that vanish when printed.
Keep the line easy to select while you work. Most tools let you click a line to move or resize it. Delete unwanted marks before saving, and use Undo soon after a mistake. Some editors also let you add a note or change a line from solid to dashed.
- Use one color for each type of review mark.
- Zoom in before drawing near small text or page edges.
- Save a new copy before making many annotations.
- Reopen the saved PDF to confirm the lines remain in place.
Fix common line-drawing problems
If you cannot draw, first check whether the PDF is open in a viewer with markup tools. A basic reader may let you view pages but not add annotations. Open the file in Acrobat, Preview, Edge, or an editor with drawing features.
A password or permission setting may block comments. Ask the file owner for an editable copy or the needed access. Do not try to bypass a restriction. If the PDF is a scanned page, you can usually draw over it, but the line will sit on top of the scan.
If a line looks crooked, zoom in and redraw it with a shape tool. Use angle snapping or a straight-line option when available. If the line disappears after saving, check whether you saved or exported the edited copy. Some tools keep marks in a temporary session until you download the file.
When color or thickness controls seem missing, select the line first. The style panel often appears only after selection. If the saved line looks different, reopen the PDF in the same app and check its properties before sharing.
